Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics (Dover Books on Physics)

The study of thermodynamics is especially timely today, as its concepts are being applied to problems in biology, biochemistry, electrochemistry, and engineering. This book treats irreversible processes and phenomena — non-equilibrium thermodynamics.S. R. de Groot and P. Mazur, Professors of Theoretical Physics, present a comprehensive and insightful survey of the foundations of the field, providing the only complete discussion of the fluctuating linear theory of irreversible thermodynamics. The application covers a wide range of topics: the theory of diffusion and heat conduction, fluid dynamics, relaxation phenomena, acoustical relaxation, and the behavior of systems in an electromagnetic field. The statistical foundations of non-equilibrium thermodynamics are treated in detail, and there are special sections on fluctuation theory, the theory of stochastic processes, the kinetic theory of gases, and the derivation of the Onsager reciprocal relations. The implications of causality conditions and of dispersion relations are analyzed in depth.Advanced students will find a great number of challenging problems, with hints for their solutions. Chemists will be especially interested in the applications to electrochemistry and the theory of chemical reactions. Physicists, teachers, scholars, biologists, and anyone interested in the principle and modern applications of non-equilibrium thermodynamics will find this classic monograph an invaluable reference.

I Purchased this text to help bridge the gap between Equilibrium Thermodynamics and Applied Kinetics, unfortunately this book is difficult to dive into. The content is excellent, has everything you need to know about irreversible process the problem is just that. I find it hard to just open this text, find a topic, and read about it. The derivations are complete but are lacking steps that a newcomer to the topic might want to see. Format is OK, would have been nice if the publisher updated this edition with less text on each page (i.e. larger font and pages). This is a hit or miss; I think it really depends on your background. If you're coming from a fluid mechanics background this might be well suited for you.

Comprehensive overview of thermodynamics applied to non-equilibrium systems, based on assuming small parts of the system are themselves approximately at equilibrium. The book derives and discusses transport phenomena and applications. However, the book is dense reading and notation is dated. E.g., using "rot" instead of "curl" for the vector operator. There's not as much discussion of physical intuition and order of magnitude estimates as I would have liked.

One corner was bent

I have 3 copies!

Rigorous introduction to the subject.

The book of excellent quality. The product is important for my studies.Use whenever you need to understand the science.

It's a must read if you're interested in non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Simple, clear, neat!

This book is a classic in the theory of Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes. It has a terrific historical introduction. But the body of the book looks a bit outdated.
